VIDEO OR PHOTOS - WHICH IS BEST?
Video or Photos - which is best?
Booking the photographer is at the top of most peoples 'wedding to do 'list. Thinking about booking a wedding videographer is often a last minute consideration. Why? This is mainly historical, because photos have been around a lot longer than video. Our parents had their wedding photographed, so we follow suit.
When a videographer is used as well as a photographer, people will often be unwilling to spend the same money on the video as they do the photos. Why?
Is one better than the other? As a professional videographer I would argue that in many ways video is far better at capturing the day and telling the story than photos. But equally I understand that some good photos of the day are also nice to have. The reality is that video and photos are not the same and actually compliment each other. Together they give you a far more complete record of the day than either on their own can produce.
Photos only capture a split second in time
Photographs provide a series of static, fragmented images of the day that are usually contrived and posed. While your photos will provide a great record of who was there on the day there is an awful lot they can't do.
They can't capture the sounds of the day, including the marriage vows, the speeches and the laughter - sometimes the tears! They don't really capture the atmosphere and mood or tell the real story of the day. These are areas where video is far superior.
Videography is far more spontaneous and fluid, capturing movement as well as sound. It simply tells the story of the day better. After all, which would you prefer to watch, a film at the cinema or just sit at home and look at the publicity stills?
The use of unobtrusive, reportage style videography gives us the chance to be the proverbial fly on the wall, capturing all the highlights of the day - many of which you will miss on such a busy day.
See yourself being married
Only a video lets you watch yourself being married, cutting your cake or having the first dance. This is an important concept. We now have the chance to sit back and watch the day over and over again; to see and hear all the little things that make the day special.
Video provides far more scope for creativity in post production, with slow motion flash backs, colour enhancements and the opportunity to tell the story of the day in a modern, film.
Silent movies
Photography was the start of image capture, giving us the first opportunity to preserve images from the past. However, time moves on and the still image has been mostly replaced by television and films. Why? Because moving images are generally more entertaining and capable of story telling than a series of still images.
So whilst videography is unlikely to replace photography, given the obvious advantages of moving images over still images, it certainly should be given equal consideration. All things being equal you should expect to spend the same - if not more- on your wedding video as you do on your wedding photos.
